Massive Nor’easter Threatens 75 Million from Southeast to New England

A bomb cyclone is poised to set off a massive nor’easter that will spread from South Carolina to Maine along the East Coast, threatening potential hurricane-force winds, blizzard conditions, power outages, and more.

Eastern U.S. braces for powerful nor’easter

At least 75 million people from the Southeast to New England face a powerful nor’easter set to unleash winter’s fury over the weekend, beginning on Friday.

Winter storm Kenan, as named by the Weather Channel, will form Friday off the Carolinas coast, rapidly strengthening and moving northward up the East Coast into Saturday.

At least 4 million people will be under blizzard warnings on Friday, which will expand into 75 million people under threat from the storm, CNN reported.

The nor’easter could drop 9-12 inches of snow in Nassau, 12-24 inches in Suffolk, News 12 Long Island reported.

The Weather Prediction Center of the NWS said that parts of coastal New England could see between 1-2 feet of snow, with locally higher amounts possible. Between 6-12 inches are likely through most of Maine.

Winter storm warning: northeast Illinois, eastern Tennessee, western North Carolina, northeast North Carolina, southeast Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Washington, D.C., southeast Pennsylvania, New Jersey, southeast New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, southern and central New Hampshire, Maine.

Winter weather advisory: northeast Illinois, northwestern and southern Indiana; northern and central and eastern Kentucky; eastern Tennessee; north South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, southwestern and eastern Pennsylvania; Maryland; Delaware, Washington, D.C., southeastern New York.

Winter storm watch: western Massachusetts, southern Vermont, western and northern New Hampshire; western and northern Maine.

Weekend forecast

Here’s the forecast for Saturday and Sunday from the National Weather Service.

Saturday: Heavy snow from New Jersey to Maine along the East Coast. Snow from the Carolinas to Maine along the East Coast. There were scattered snow showers over the Tennessee-North Carolina border, eastern West Virginia, and Western New York. Snow over northern Minnesota, Wisconsin, and most of Michigan.

Rain, mixed precipitation and snow over parts of central and western Washington, rain for northwestern Oregon.

Sunday: Snow over portions of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming in the West. To the east, snow for North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New York, and southeast Maine.

Thunderstorms over most of Texas in the Western, central, southern, and southeast regions.

Rain along the coasts of Washington, Oregon, and northwestern California, with mixed precipitation over much of Oregon and Washington. Mixed precipitation for east-central Arizona and west-central New Mexico.
