Traveling for Thanksgiving? Here’s Your US Region-by-Region Forecast


If you’re hitting the road on Wednesday, the busiest travel day of the year, here is some good news: weather conditions will be quiet across the Lower 48. However, some travelers could deal with stronger weather on their return.

US Travel forecast for Wednesday and the weekend return

Here’s a region-by-region look at affected weather conditions for Wednesday and the weekend return across the Lower 48, from the Washington Post and the National Weather Service (NWS).


Wednesday: Rain in the Pacific Northwest should remain offshore. Snow over the northern Rockies in the Intermountain regions over portions of Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, southeastern Nebraska, and north-central New Mexico. Heavy snow possible over parts of northern Idaho.

Weekend: Stormy conditions will work down the coastline on Saturday, and snow could begin in the Sierra Nevada on Sunday, while temperatures should warm in the Rockies.

Central US

Wednesday: Highs around freezing in the Dakotas with possible freezing rain, while the Great Lakes will be in the 30s and 40s. Chicago will be closer to the 50s. Central plans will see the 50s and 60s. Thunderstorms over Eastern Texas, Eastern Oklahoma, southeastern Kansas, and central and southern Missouri.

Weekend: Chance of rain on Saturday, but moves out of the southern Plains on Sunday.

South and Tennessee Valley

Wednesday: Mostly pleasant, with widespread highs in the 60s. Northern regions will see temperatures in the lower 60s. The Gulf Coast will see the 60s to lower 70s, while South Florida will be in the 80s. Some spotty showers over the eastern coast. Thunderstorms over Arkansas, northern and western Louisiana, and Northwestern Mississippi.

Weekend: Showers possible over Louisiana, Arkansas, and Mississippi could spread north and east on Sunday, although confidence is low.

Mid Atlantic

Wednesday: Mild and dry weather anticipated for Wednesday, with highs ranging from the mid-50s to lower-to-mid-60s.

Weekend: Rain likely to arrive on Sunday.


Wednesday: Mixed precipitation for northeastern New York and the northern regions of Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Northern Maine will see highs in the upper 20s, while New Hampshire, much of Upstate New York, and Vermont will be in the 30s, southern New England in the 40s, and near fifty for the South Coast. Mostly dry conditions with sunshine and a few passing clouds.

Weekend: Rain moves in on Saturday, and a chance of rain late in the day on Sunday. Highs range from the upper 30s and 40s interior to low-to-mid-50s near the coast.
